My Review
The Worst Couple in the world is a laugh out loud satirical romantic comedy by Holly-Tierney Bedford. I’m a huge fan of romantic comedies and I also have an affinity for satire, so I was interested to see how the author would combine the two. I was not disappointed- she did an excellent job and her writing kept me snickering throughout the entire book.
The story follows the eponymous “worst couple in the world,” Zeke and Angelique, as they do their best to claw their way to stardom. Along the way, the two get into all types of misadventures. How far will they go in order to become influencers? And at what point is love simply another commodity?
In this brief novella, the author does an excellent job of poking fun at the general absurdity of our social media obsessed world. The only gentle criticism I have of the text is that Angelique and Zeke were (for me at least) too terrible. As people (or as characters) I wouldn’t have wanted to spend the length of an entire novel with them; however, the novella format was the perfect length. It kept the story moving and I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a fly on the wall observing the lives of Zeke and Angelique. The ending was perfect as well and caught me almost entirely off guard!
Although I really enjoyed laughing at the outlandish exploits of Angelique and Zeke, I couldn’t help but feel a little uncomfortable at times- which I believe is the point of good satire. I will certainly stop and consider before I snap another selfie or share another inane tweet. I highly recommend this book for fans of romantic humor or anyone in need of a good laugh.
