Home for the Holidays – Traveling While Visually Impaired

Introduction: The holiday season is one of the busiest times for travel. As a person with low vision, I have always loved to travel, but traveling alone over the holidays can be tricky, even for people without disabilities. I attended graduate school and worked in Washington D.C. During my years there, I would travel approximately 200 miles to return home every holiday season to spend time with my family.

The longest leg of my journey was by rail, and I quickly fell in love with trains. I also gained experience using Uber. On my return back to graduate school, I would take an Uber or a taxi from Union Station to my apartment if I was too tired to navigate using the metro….
