Who Killed Patrick? A Guinea Pig Mystery by Syl Waters

From the Back Cover: Sun, sea and… murder in Fuerteventura!

Boring. Going nowhere. That was Tarah’s life in the UK, before she moved to Fuerteventura to start a new adventure. But things came unstuck quicker than she’d planned. A dead guest on the holiday complex she manages threatens to pull apart her hoped-for dream life.

If she wants to keep her job and save the reputation of the business, she’s got to find out what happened to Patrick. Did he die of natural causes – or was he murdered?

Tarah’s pet guinea pig, Mr Bob, has a knack for sniffing out trouble and he suspects foul play. The mission is on: Who Killed Patrick?

With the assistance of Mr Bob and Diego, a local plumber, Tarah turns amateur sleuth to find out the truth.

Can Tarah and Mr Bob find the murderer before it’s too late? Will they be able to save the business and protect their blissful new life?

My Review

One of my favorite genres of fiction is a “cozy mystery with cute animal side kick,” so Who Killed Patrick was a delight for me to read. Simply from the synopsis, I knew that I was going to enjoy this book, but I was surprised by how quickly I was engrossed in the story.

As the story opens, the heroine decides that she wants more to life than her soul crushing desk job. She realizes that we only get a short time in this world and chooses to make a drastic change. Within the first chapter, she moves to a tropical island to start a new life. This immediately caught my attention, because I’ve often fantasized about moving to a warmer climate (my father was from the Philippines and I would love to visit some day).

What I appreciate about this book is that the tropical island is not just a backdrop for the story. Instead, the heroine bonds with different members of her new community, including fellow ex-patriots and her new landlord, Jorge.

Her guinea pig sidekick stole the show for me, and the book is sprinkled full of fun guinea pig facts. My only complaint about this book is that some of the language seemed unnecessarily coarse; however, I suppose that is just how people speak nowadays. In reality, the language isn’t anything worse than a PG-13 movie.  If you enjoy cozy mysteries, Who Killed Patrick would be a fun and quirky book that is perfect to read in the summertime (or in the winter when you wish it was summer!)
