Memoirs of a Karate Fighter is a memoir that packs a powerful punch! (Book Review and Blog Tour)

This hard hitting memoir tackles issues such as mental illness, racism, and the strength of the human spirit.

Synopsis: Memoirs of a Karate Fighter

Novelist and former karate champion Ralph Robb recounts his experiences at one of Europe’s toughest dojos and provides an insight into the philosophy and training methods of a club which produced national, European and world titleholders. In a hard-hitting story, Ralph tells of the fights on and off the mat; his experiences as one of a very few black residents in an area in which racist members of the National Front were very active; and the tragic descent into mental illness and premature death of the training partner who was also his best friend.

My Review

Memoirs of a Karate Fighter by Ralph Robb packs a serious punch. I enjoy reading memoirs because they are a peak into what life is like for different people from around the world. T

Personally, I don’t know much about karate, but I also wanted to read this book because my father was a talented marital artist. I didn’t get the chance to know my father very well, but I was always proud of the fact that he was a skilled athlete.

Ralph Robb writes with such talent that even someone who is unfamiliar with the sport can get lost in the story. The story is very fast paced and I read it in just a few days.

Memoirs of a Karate Fighter by Ralph Robb is an elegant memoir that moves swiftly through the pacing like a trained fighter.

Robb writes with heart about his experiences with racism, his growth from adolescence to becoming a father, and the painful struggles of his best friend with mental illness. In the end, the memoir is a testimony to the strength of the human spirit. It is about the power of friendship and how we all struggle to face our fears– both on the mat and in the world.

If you enjoy memoirs, stories athletes triumphing over adversity or are a fan of 80’s Kung Fu films, then I highly recommend Ralph Robb’s Memoirs of a Karate Fighter.
