Fall is the perfect season to curl up with a cozy mystery!

Introduction:

Hello, Friends! Happy Pumpkin Season! I absolutely love fall. I adore pumpkin flavoured EVERYTHING– pumpkin coffee, pumpkin muffins, pumpkin pie! I love how the intense heat of summer is slowly giving way to cool breezes in the morning and the way I can see the trees in the park beginning to change from green to orange. I love cozy sweaters, the Feast of All Saints, and doing something to help the community on Thanksgiving. I also love all the delightful fall festivals and craft fairs we have here in Pennsylvania. Fall makes me want to start crocheting cozy blankets and knitting snuggly sweaters.

Perhaps because of this season’s association in my mind with back-to-school time, Fall also has a way of rekindling my love of reading. I’ve been in a bit of a reading slump lately, but the arrival of this season reawakens the bookworm in me.

I was offered a free copy of Murder in Autumn in exchange by Lesley Cookman in exchange for an honest review. I was happy to accept since the title fit with my autumnal frame of mind and because cozy mysteries seem perfect for this time of year.

Publisher’s Summary of Murder in Autumn

With Shakespeare on the stage, there’s danger waiting in the wings for super-sleuth Libby Sarjeant.

Libby Sarjeant is proudly hosting an original production of Much Ado About Nothing at the Oast Theatre, which features a daring twist on the classic play. But an old acquaintance of Libby’s – irascible director Constance Matthews – is outraged by the show, stirring strong feelings throughout Steeple Martin.

When a body is subsequently found in the woodlands of a grand estate, the community is shocked by the prospect of murder. But the case is far from straightforward, with dark secrets lurking beneath the surface.

With the help of friends and family, can amateur detective Libby – and her friend Fran – unravel a truly perplexing puzzle?

My Review of Murder in Autumn

“Murder in Autumn” by Lesley Cookman is a charming cozy mystery set against the backdrop of a small English village, Steeple Martin. As a person who adores Fall, I couldn’t help but appreciate the delightful seasonal atmosphere that permeates the story. The cozy mystery genre is perfectly suited for the fall, and the author’s descriptions of the season and the setting felt like a refreshing breeze on a warm autumn day.

One of the my favorite aspects of this book is Libby Sarjeant’s involvement in a production of Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing.” The fusion of theater and mystery adds depth to the plot and showcases the author’s creativity.

However, as a newcomer to the Libby Sarjeant series, I found it slightly challenging to keep up with the intricate web of characters and their shared histories. The story occasionally references past books and adventures, which, while intriguing, left me wishing I had started from the beginning of the series to fully grasp the nuances of the relationships and backgrounds.

Despite this initial confusion, “Murder in Autumn” delivered on the cozy mystery charm and provided a pleasant reading experience. The mystery at the heart of the story kept me engaged, even if I occasionally stumbled over character connections.

I enjoyed this cozy autumn mystery, but I think I would prefer to go back to the beginning of the series before reading any more of Libby Sarjeant’s adventures. For those seeking an atmospheric fall read, “Murder in Autumn” is an ideal choice to add to your Fall “to be read list.”
