The time has come-
My dearest friend,
The time, indeed,
To fight.
The time has come-
My dearest love,
Pick up your pen-
And Write!
-R.L.H.
About this poem:
I wanted to send you, dear reader, a sign of hope to start your New Year. If you are looking for a sign that God loves you and that your story is valid, please consider this little poem to be that sign.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately about writing, especially as writing as an act of rebellion. Over and over, I have been told that I can’t do things.
Over and over, the world has told me that I’m not good enough- but God has told me differently.
When I was an undergraduate, I was railroaded out of the music department because one of my professors, “didn’t teach students with disabilities.”
Later, when I was a student teacher, the principal at the school where I taught told me, “I worry that leaving a blind woman alone in the classroom is dangerous for the students.”
In seminary, I was reminded repeatedly that “The church does not need to conform to the Americans With Disabilities Act.”
As an adult in my current career, If I had a dollar for every time I was told (sometimes with words and sometimes with only disdainful looks) that “women don’t preach,” I would have enough money to pay off my exorbitant student loans.
I wouldn’t be where I am today if it weren’t for the grace of God and the wonderfully supportive friends that I have had the blessing to know in my life. I know from personal experience just how important words of encouragement are for people to hear. Words have power (James 3:1-12).
Allow me to use my words today to speak words of truth to you this day-
If you’re looking for a sign that God loves you-
If you’re looking for a sign that you matter-
If you’re wondering whether or not your life has meaning –
Look no further.
Here it is:
You are loved.
You are special.
You have a purpose.
Your life has meaning.
Dear Reader-
Yes, you CAN!
May your 2019 be full of God’s love!
Now it’s your turn! Have you overcome tragedy or trauma in your own life? How has God strengthened you? I would love to hear your thoughts. Let me know in the comments below. Also, don’t forget to follow me on Twitter and Instagram!
Such inspiriting words and proof in your actions. I applaud you, Rebecca and wish you strength and sustenance for your journey. Newness for 2019!
